Tolkien’s novel was intended to be the last adaptation of the series (essentially Gospodar prstenova: Prstenova druzina (2001), Gospodar prstenova: Dvije kule (2002) and Gospodar prstenova: Povratak kralja (2003)), but Tolkien’s heir. Amazon eventually acquired the rights on the condition that the series be separate from Peter Jackson’s previous adaptations and that it could not conflict with what Tolkien had previously written. The original ideas that were proposed included backstory stories with characters like Aragorn, Gimli and Gandalf, but the showrunners chose to focus on important, untold events from the history of the novels rather than simple side stories, so they agreed with the studio that the series. would take place in the second book age.

Not having the rights to Tolkien’s The Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales, and A History of Middle-earth (which explores the first and second ages), they scoured the Lord of the Rings novels and appendices for passages and references to the second age. Of course, I have high hopes for The Lord of the Rings, which is close to perfection in terms of timing and fiction.
